Felix Verdejo successfully defended his WBO Latino lightweight title by clobbering no-hope Josenilson Dos Santos…

Friday night at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in a fight televised live on TruTV, WBO Latino lightweight champion Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo (19-0, 14 KOs), the young gun fighting out of San Juan, successfully defended his title by flattening Josenilson Dos Santos (27-4, 17 KOs), a part-time boxer and full-time hairdresser from Santana de Parnaíba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, at 2:21 of round two.

Fighting out of the red corner in red, white and blue trunks, 22-year-old Verdejo is currently Puerto Rico’s favorite son. With Tito Trinidad sitting ringside and shouting words of encouragement, with Miguel Cotto sitting at home and insisting he beat Canelo, the Isla del Encanto’s hopes ride on young “El Diamante.”

Under the circumstances, Dos Santos, fighting out of the blue corner in pink and white trunks, had no business being in the ring. He might be two inches taller than the champion, but he eight years older and hadn’t fought in 14 months. That and the fact that he had won one of his last three fights, to 1-24 Renato Pedro no less, suggests that Dos Santos spent considerably more time in his beauty parlor than in a boxing gym.

Showcasing fighters is nothing new. Those in the stadium had come to see their hometown hero win. But a little competition goes a long way, whereas no competition goes anywhere but back to Brazil.

The knockout was impressive, which was presumably the point. We’ll consider it a gimme and hope that Verdejo, who deserves better, fights a live opponent in his next outing.
