WBA “KO to Drugs Campaign”
The WBA announced today that its “KO to Drugs Campaign” was coming to Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, in conjunction with Steeltown Boxing Club. A fight card is scheduled for March 10, 2012, and the WBA KO to Drugs Campaign/ Steeltown Boxing Club show is dedicated in memory of Robbie Wilcox with the proceeds raised going to the childhood cancer “Camp Trillium.” The Trillium Childhood Cancer Support Centre offers and promotes recreational experiences to bring children with cancer and their families together. It provides an environment that normalizes relationships and experiences, helping children and their families in the healing process while enhancing their quality of life.
The “KO to Drugs Campaign” was introduced by WBA President Dr. Gilberto Mendoza in 1989 at the WBA Convention on Margarita Island, Venezuela.
The mission of the “KO to Drugs Campaign” is to raise youth awareness about the dangers drugs pose to themselves and to society as a whole. WBA Director George Martinez said “the WBA will spare no effort to promulgate this message, especially in our sport of boxing. Thus far we have concentrated mainly in the pro ranks of the sport, but on March 10, 2012, we are excited to bring our campaign, in groundbreaking fashion, to Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, at the state-of- the-art Ancaster Fairgrounds Merritton Hall with the help of Steeltown Boxing Club managed by Robert Wilcox, Ontario Boxing Head Coach. We invite everybody in the boxing community to support our effort and join us in this very important task. And we thank Robert Wilcox and Jensen Strauss Boxing Limitee (Michael Schmidt, agent) in assisting us in making this a memorable event.”
Robert Wilcox of Steeltown Boxing Club admitted that “it was an honor to be selected by the WBA to hold this groundbreaking amateur event for a worthy cause and in memory of our son Robbie Wilcox. It is a great opportunity for everyone in the boxing community to come together in a positive manner.” WBA President Gilberto Mendoza will be present, as will former Kitchener native and two-time light heavyweight champion Donny “Golden Boy” Lalonde, in addition to several other celebrity attendees.
