The super middleweights of the World Boxing Super Series were the first to select their opponents for the quarter-finals. WBA Super Champion George Groves, as the top seed, had four opponents to choose from. He picked British rival Jamie Cox for a “domestic dust-up.” Second-seeded Callum Smith chose Swedish Erik Skoglund. Because Smith is the WBC’s top-ranked challenger, the bout will have the WBC Diamond Championship on the line. The third seed was given to the winner of the July 15showdown between Chris Eubank Jr. and Arthur Abraham. Since both fighters are in training, this pairing was represented by Chris Eubank Sr., who chose “The Dentist” Avni Yildirim. This ensured the stage was set for the quarter-final between fourth-seed Juergen Braehmer and US challenger Rob Brant.

For the cruiserweights in the tournament, second-seed Murat Gassiev, the IBF champion, wasn’t able to pick an opponent because he must face mandatory challenger Krzysztof Wlodarczyk. Olympic gold medalist Oleksandr Usyk, the first seed, selected Marco Huck as his opponent, while third-seed Mairis Briedis chose Mike Perez. This set up the bout between fourth-seeded Yunier Dorticos and Dmitry Kudryashov.
