Wladimir Fights Francesco Pianeta

Wladimir Fights Francesco Pianeta
Mismatch? The inevitable groans, and lame piñata jokes, are already circling the globe.

His is not a household name. Nevertheless Francesco Pianeta will fight Wladimir Klitschko on May 4 in Mannhein, Germany, and all five of his heavyweight belts (IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO and Ring Magazine) will be at stake.

Pianeta was born in Cosenza, Calabria, Italy, but has lived in Germany since he was six. He now makes his home in Gelsenkirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen. More important than the 28-year-old Pianeta’s current mailing address is the fact that he is 6-foot-5, a southpaw, and has a record of 28-0-1 with 15 KOs.

He also survived testicular cancer, although that doesn’t appear on his ledger.

2012 was a busy year for Pianeta. He was Klitschko’s sparring partner for a short time. He also notched wins over Zack Page (21-37-2) in January, Oliver McCall (56-11) in May, Frans Botha (48-7-3) in September, and Nelson Dario Dominguez (14-1-1) in November.

None of the aforementioned heavyweights appear to be apt preparation for challenging Dr. Steelhammer. But that is nothing new.

“I have great respect for Francesco Pianeta,” Klitschko said. “He is young and is an uncomfortable southpaw to face, plus he has a strong fighting spirit.

“Pianeta will do everything to achieve his goals. I am warned and will be preparing very hard with my team.”

“I was in Wladimir’s camp as a sparring partner last year,” said Pianeta. “I saw his weaknesses and will use them for me. I know many experts see me as the underdog but I like this role and will shock the boxing world when I knock out Klitschko!”

We have heard that before, too many times to count. The inevitable groans, and lame piñata jokes, are already circling the globe. Which beggars the question: Who should the 36-year-old Klitschko next fight? David Price? Seth Mitchell? Alexander Povetkin? Does anyone want to see him fight Tony Thompson a third time? What about a rematch with David Haye?

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Francesco Pianeta will be broadcast live on EPIX and EPIX.com.
