Evander TKOs Nielsen
Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (44-10-2, 29 KOs), at age 48, stopped 46-year old Brian Nielsen (64-3, 43 KOs) in the tenth round Saturday night at the Koncerthuset in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Nielsen returned from an eight-year retirement to get it on with The Real Deal and, after tonight’s performance, he’ll retire again, and maybe this time for good.
The Dane’s inflated record was no match for what remains of Holyfield’s skills. He was dropped in round three, got busted up bad, and ate knuckle sandwiches as if he was the hungriest man in Scandinavia.
After 10 rounds of battering, referee Fabian Guggenheim had seen enough and called a halt to the action. Nielsen wanted to continue, but the ref did him a favor when he waved it off at 2:49. At the time of the stoppage, Holyfield was leading on the three judges’ cards with identical scores of 88-82.
Holyfield, it goes without saying, will see this victory as a sign from God that he’s meant to continue fighting. I guess if God can’t stop Evander from soldiering on, nobody can.
