Yuriorkis Gamboa Upset

The end of Yuriorkis Gamboa

Yuriorkis Gamboa (26-2) was once the next big star in boxing circles with an incredible amount of potential after his Olympic gold medal. Golden Boy signed him based on that potential but even when he returned after a layoff against Rene Alvarado (24-8). He lost to career featherweight Robinson Castellanos (24-12), performing poorly in the fight that probably ends his career. His once lightning speed had all but dissapeared and he looked lethargic throughout the bout. Gamboa was knocked down in the third round as Castellanos dropped him when showboating. That was followed by another knockdown early in the fourth round. Gamboa barely survived the round, choosing to exchange with the Mexican. The next couple of rounds were his best in the fight but in the seventh Castellanos once again enjoyed success with an uppercut and a late left hook. Gamboa told his cornermen he did not want to continue at the end of that round. He was down on all three scorecards (68-63 and 67-64 twice) when it was stopped. He explained afterwards he felt “dizzy” and “could not go on.”
